Claribel Shurtz-Alford

November 26, 1929 - October 22, 2019

Claribel Shurtz-Alford, age 92 of Chanute, KS, passed away on October 22, 2019 at Country Place Senior Living in Chanute, KS. She was born November 26, 1926 in Humboldt, KS, the daughter of William T. and Mable (Timmons) Hale. She was raised Humboldt and moved to Chanute in 1984. On June 17, 1944, she married Jacob Earl Shurtz in Independence, KS, he preceded her in death. After the death of Jacob, she married James Henry Alford on January 16, 1984 in Miami, OK. He also preceded her in death. Both husbands were World War I veterans. Claribel enjoyed crocheting and was a great cook. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Chanute, KS and of Family Community Educations. Survivors include: Children: Sue Shurtz Adams and husband Barry of Chanute, KS Beth Shurtz Gillham and husband Terry of Moran, KS Golda Mae Alford Washburn of Chanute, KS Grandchildren: Stacy Adams Lucas and husband Jeff of Wichita, KS Brian Adams and wife June of Chanute, KS Tammy Gillham Burden and husband Jeremy of Wellington, KS Colette Shurtz Dahmer and husband Dustin of Erie, KS Larry Taylor and wife Karen of Garden City, KS Kathryn Taylor of Chanute, KS Rick Taylor of Chanute, KS Great Grandsons: Rocky Hopper of Wichita, KS Clint Hopper and wife Sarah of Andover, KS Caleb Hopper of Wichita, KS Jacob Adams of Chanute, KS Brady Adams of Chanute, KS Connor Burden and wife Megan of Wichita, KS Daulton Burden and wife Kylie of Wellington, KS Julian Burden of Wellington, KS Step-Great Grandson: Chris Taylor and wife Felicia of Pocasset, OK Great-Great Granddaughter: Lennox Hopper of Andover, KS Step-Great-Great Grandsons: Tripp Taylor and Drey Taylor of Pocasset, OK Ellie and Brody Hunter of Andover, KS Numerous close friends from life’s many connections Claribel was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; Leslie and Vera Timmons King (who raised her; sons, George Wayne Shurtz and George Earl Shurtz; daughter, Vera Ellen Shurtz LaSalle; half-sister, Neva Hale Bash; half-brother, George Hale; step-son, Melvin Alford; great grandson, Michael Gillham Burden and best friend, Thelma Coppage Nelson. Family will greet friends and family on Monday, October 28, 2019 from 9-9:45 a.m. at Countryside Funeral Home in Humboldt, KS. Graveside service will follow the visitation at 10 a.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt KS. Online condolences may be left at: www.countrysidefh.com. The family suggests memorials to be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.
