Alta "Glenn" Coble's Obituary
Alta “Glenn” Coble, age 91, died Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas following a brief illness. Glenn was born November 30, 1924 near Severy, Kansas, one of six children of Blanche (Jenks) and Alta Coble. He was educated at Economy Rural Grade School and graduated from Severy High School.
On March 14, 1954, Glenn married Joyce Sheel and to this union were born two children, Van and Jill, who have fond memories of their father’s ways, work ethics, and mannerisms.
Being a lifelong resident of this area, Glenn was co-owner of Coble Feed Store in Severy with his brother, Floyd before moving to Moline and working for the former Concrete Materials which is now known as Martin-Marietta. Having worked for 35 years there as the accounts manager, Glenn retired in 1991.
Glenn’s hard work ethic and involvement in the community were very evident by how active a life he maintained. Glenn served on the church council and as a trustee of the Moline United Methodist Church. He spent time in his earlier years as a volunteer fireman for the City of Moline Fire Department. When his kids were younger and beyond their involvement, Glenn was the youth baseball coach for PeeWee, Little League and Babe Ruth and Van remembers riding with his dad as he also was the grounds keeper for the ball field.
The West Elk School district was fortunate to have Glenn elected to the school board, having served as president and for more than 14 years he proudly served the patrons of USD 282 in their educational endeavors. Before district consolidation, he also served on the Moline School Board. Having a servant attitude must have been in his blood because Glenn was a past member of the Moline City Council and sat on the board of directors for the Moline Medical Clinic, helping with its development.
In his leisure time, Glenn enjoyed participating in the Elk Valley Kansas Day celebration at Longton and sharing history stories about the rock quarry, traveling down dusty country roads and dancing. He would travel to nearby communities such as Fall River and Altoona to join other dancers.
Glenn is survived by his two children, son Van (Jeannette) Coble of Winfield, Kansas and daughter Jill Coble of Katy, Texas, sisters Pauline Bellar (Vernon) Brewster of Howard, Kansas, Leta (Don) Brookover of La Habra, CA, and Lorene Pape of Emporia, Kansas and brother Ted (Barbara) Coble of Basehor, Kansas, sister-in-law Donna Coble of Severy, KS, grandson Zachary (Naomi) Coble of Tucson, AZ and close friend, Sharon Hursh, Cheney, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Glenn in death are his parents, brothers Floyd, George and Bob
A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Countryside Funeral Home, 206 East Washington in Howard, KS. Funeral services are Friday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Moline United Methodist Church with Dorothy Ellsworth presiding. Interment will follow at the Moline City Cemetery. The family is suggesting memorials be given to: The Moline United Methodist Church, West Elk Athletic Department or the Moline Medical Clinic.
