Arty H Basye's Obituary
Arty Haskell Basye, age 100, of Chanute, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016 in Chanute Kansas. Arty was born on March 30, 1916 in Jewel, KS the son of Charles and Nina (Kelsey) Basye.
Arty began working early as a boy running a paper route with his brother. After graduating from Chanute High School, he took a job as a night clerk at the recently opened Tioga Hotel in Chanute. He then went on to become part of the first graduating class of the Chanute Junior College in 1939 and in 2016 was given the honor of throwing the first pitch of the season for Neosho County Community College. His first job after graduation from college was with Boeing in Wichita where he worked as a design engineer. He also served in the Army Air Corps near the end of WWII. He moved to California and Arizona to raise his family until 2008, when returned to Chanute where he grew up.
Arty believed strongly that when he did a job, it needed to be done right and his work reflected that attitude. In his free time he liked to be outside in his garden and he liked watching the birds. In his younger years he enjoyed trips to Pike’s Peak where he rode his bicycle to the top. Above all, Arty liked helping people. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Chanute.
