Barbara (Carroll) Helton's Obituary
Barbara Carroll Helton 91, died October 18, 2014. She was born on February 21, 1923, in Toronto, KS to Fred and Auda Carroll. She grew up in Wichita, KS. She graduated from Wichita schools and attended Wichita University. She married William Helton Jr. on March 14, 1943, at the Ft. Leavenworth Chapel. She worked at Beach Aircraft during World War II.
When her husband returned from the Pacific they moved to Chanute, KS where they lived for 54 years. During this time she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the First United Methodist Church where she was a member. She was a member of several social clubs.
She retired from Southeast KS Area Agency on Aging in 1988 where she was director of the Information and Assistance program for ten years.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers; Frank Carroll of Hoisington and Fred Carroll of Wichita, and her son-in-law Jim Roberts of Lawrence.
The Heltons moved to Lawrence in 1997 and returned to Chanute in 2010. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in March 2014.
She is survived by, one son; Richard Helton and his wife Mechalina of Salinas, CA, two daughters; Carol Helton Roberts and Joan Helton Myers and her husband Ken of Kansas City, MO, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A Joint Celebration of Life for Bill and Barbara Helton will be held on Jan. 23, 2015 at 1:30PM at the First United Methodist Church in Chanute, KS; inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors by the Chanute Honor Guard. Informal visitation will take place from 1:00-1:30PM prior to the service, the family suggests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church and sent in care of Countryside Funeral Home 101 N. Highland Chanute, KS 66720.
