Betty Jean Stokes' Obituary
Betty Jean Stokes, 81, of Chanute passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. Betty was born on April 23, 1942, in Erie, Kansas, the only child of Eugene U. and Annabella N. (Gough) Doane.
Betty grew up in Erie and graduated from Erie High School in 1960. Betty attended and graduated from cosmetology school in Coffeyville. Betty was a waitress for many years in and also was a hair dresser.
With her first name being Betty, she was drawn to the cartoon character Betty Boop and was an avid fan of hers for most of her entire life. Betty also loved Donald Duck. In her spare time, Betty loved to knit, crochet, and sew everything from afghans and socks to sewing a suit for her husband and sewing her daughter’s wedding dress. Betty loved her family and would spend as much time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as she possibly could. Betty was also a member of the Healing Center Church of God in Chanute.
Betty will always be remembered for saying, “I can do anything with Christ,” she is greatly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Betty is survived by her daughter Veronica Simmons (Ron) of Chanute, KS, step-son John Piatt of Cherryvale, KS, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Annabella, her husbands Joe Leritz and Bill Stokes, and her daughter Connie Asher.
Cremation has been requested and a graveside memorial service will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 11:00 am at East Hill Cemetery in Erie. Memorials have been suggested to the American Cancer Society and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at: www.countrysidefh.com.
