Billy Dean Spurgeon's Obituary
Billy Dean Spurgeon, 85, of Thayer passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Heritage Healthcare in Chanute. Billy was born at home in Clark County Missouri and lived his early years across the county line road in Lewis County near St. Patrick and Derrhas Missouri.
Billy worked as a farmer and in other areas of agriculture while growing up. In high school he enjoyed playing basketball and fast pitch softball and went on to become an excellent coach to many youths in the Williamstown, Missouri community, including his own children. After high school, Billy served his country honorably in the United States Army from August 21, 1957 to July 30, 1960. Billy was also a member of the Williamstown chapter of the Masons.
Billy would eventually leave his home community and take up residence in Southeast Kansas where he worked in construction and as a truck driver. Billy is greatly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Billy is survived by his wife Uhlamae Spurgeon, his two daughters Theresa Kossack and Catherine Jenkins, Uhlamae’s children: Crystal McNeal and her husband Eddie, Gayle Shuster and her husband Dale, and Sheldon Hurst and his wife Kay, his brother Carl (Bruiser), grandchildren Levi Shuster, Cassidy Watkins, Cassandra Swearingen, Vincent Spurgeon, and Robin Jenkins, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Viola, brothers Elmer Jay, Calvin, George, and Cecil, sisters Dorothy and Betty, his son Jeremey Lane Spurgeon I and his grandson Jeremy Lane Spurgeon II.
Cremation has been requested and a memorial service will be held on Monday, October 30, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Countryside Funeral Home in Chanute. Burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery in Chanute following the service with military honors from the Chanute Honor Guard. Online condolences may be left at: www.countrysidefh.com.
