Carol Elizabeth Pope's Obituary
Carol Elizabeth (Johnson) Pope, age 83, of Eureka, KS passed away January 14, 2020 at Eureka Nursing Center.
Carol was born January 28, 1936 in Dupree, South Dakota to Carl and Gerda Johnson. She was raised on the family homestead alongside 2 siblings. Her early years of school were attended in a one room schoolhouse built on skids that would be moved around the area depending on where the largest concentration of kids were. She graduated high school with top honors, and was her class valedictorian. After high school, she attended Black Hill State for 1 year before meeting her future husband while working at the local grain elevator.
On October 20, 1955, Carol married Leon Pope in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. They moved to the Eureka, KS area in 1977, raising 2 sons together. She is remembered as a dedicated wife and mother. She loved to play cards with her sons, taking them fishing, and having conversations with them about real life. She worked at the Greenwood County courthouse for many years, retiring as the County Clerk.
Carol is survived by her husband, Leon Pope.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harold Johnson, and sister Viola Shrader.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 10:00 am at the Severy Baptist Church in Severy, KS.
Interment will follow in the Janesville Cemetery, Hamilton, KS.
Memorial contributions in Carol’s name can be made to the Harry Hynes Hospice and can be mailed to or left with the funeral home.
