Charles F Palmer's Obituary
Charles Frank Palmer, age 84, of Fredonia passed away on Monday, June 25, 2012, at Medicalodge in Dewey, OK. Charles was born on July 18, 1927, in Duck Creek township near Lafontaine, KS. He was the son of Charles R. and Myrtle E. (Loader) Palmer.
Charles earned his high school G.E.D. in 1954 while serving in the U.S. Navy. Charles and his bride, Dolores Prunty, were united in marriage on October 19, 1945, at Wichita, KS. Charles and Dolores were married for 66 years. Dolores preceded Charles in death six days prior to his own on June 19, 2012.
Charles served in the Merchant Marines in 1945 and 1946. During that time he traveled the world including ports-of-call in South America and Europe. Charles joined the Navy in 1951 and served until 1955. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Hornet CVA-12, Carrier Air Group Nine, and was present during Castle Bravo- the first hydrogen bomb test detonated on March 1, 1954, at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands. After leaving the Navy, Charles and Dolores returned to Fredonia to make it their home for more than 50 years.
Charles was a member of the First Christian Church in Fredonia. He was a farmer and rancher and worked for LaFarge Corporation until his retirement in 1989.
Charles is survived by two sons:
Larry Palmer and wife Lori of Fredonia, KS
Ron Palmer and wife Tina of Scottsdale, AZ.
7 grandchildren: Blaine Palmer Estes and husband Chad, of Fredonia, KS; Lacey Palmer Spohn and husband Ryan, of Fredonia, KS; Taylor and Alexis Palmer, of Fredonia, KS; and Lauren, Kelsey, and Brecken Palmer, of Scottsdale, AZ.
5 great grandchildren: Zeli and Hazel Estes, and Toryn, Vaylin, and Kacyn Spohn, of Fredonia, KS.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Rodney R. Palmer and Clem L. Palmer.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 29, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at the First Christian Church in Fredonia with Pastor Milo Steffen officiating. Burial will follow at the Weakley Cemetery near New Albany. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 28, 2012 from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials have been suggested to the First Christian Church and may be left with the funeral home.
