Danny Edward Brown's Obituary
Danny (Dan) E. Brown, 84, passed away on February 28, 2026 in Chanute, Kansas.
Danny was born on October 14, 1941, in Little Rock, Ark. He was raised in Chanute, Ks. by his parents, Betty and Louis “Shorty” Bejma. A proud graduate of Chanute High School’s Class of 1960, he went on to serve in the Army National Guard from 1960–1964, stationed in Ft Leonard Wood, Ks.
Danny married Mary Lou Montgomery in 1962, and they settled together in Humboldt, Ks. The joys of his life were his two children, Randall and Sheila, and granddaughter Riley.
Danny had long careers at several places of business. He served many years as funeral coordinator at Johnson & Johnson Funeral Home in Chanute before becoming a route salesman with Wonder Bread Hostess Cakes. He spent more than 30 years on a delivery route along HWY-169 from Humboldt to Independence and all stops in between. He was proud to say that he served that route accident free. After retiring from Wonder Bread, Danny then worked 17 years for Hofer & Hofer Construction. He was fondly known as Hofer’s gopher during this time.
Danny was an avid coffee drinker and storyteller. He would meet most mornings at H&H Restaurant in Humboldt with good friends. No one will ever know how many of those stories were true, but they were always told with a wry smile and much laughter. His best hours were spent on his John Deer mower, tinkering in his woodworking shop, trips to play slots, and slow drives through town. He was Humboldt’s best tour guide for family when they came to visit.
He loved watching local Humboldt sporting teams and most importantly his Kansas City Chiefs. He was a collector of all things Wonder Bread and Chiefs memorabilia proudly displaying his many mugs, trucks, hats, footballs, jerseys, and championship rings.
Danny was preceded in death by son Randall Brown, parents Betty & Louis Bejma, wife Mary Lou Beck, and sister-in-law Darleen Brown.
Danny is survived by daughter Sheila Brown, granddaughter Riley and husband Seth Hegwald, brother Larry Brown, and numerous other family members.
A graveside service honoring Danny’s life will be held on May 4, 2026, 10:30 AM, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt KS under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humboldt Volunteer Fire Department or donations of canned foods may be made to the Humboldt Food Pantry located just behind the Humboldt Senior Center. https://www.humboldtkansas.com/volunteer-fire-department
