Darold Lee Elrod's Obituary
Darold Lee Elrod, age 83 of Chanute, KS passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019 in Girard, KS. He was born on February 21, 1935 on a country farm NW of Thayer, KS, the son of Truman P. and Ortha K. (Adams) Elrod. He was raised and attended schools in Wichita, Urbana, Galesburg and graduated from Thayer High School in Kansas in 1953.
He went to Neosho County Community College in Chanute, KS in 1954 and then went on to Pittsburg State College in 1955 through 1957. After college he went into the United States Army and was a Military Policeman. After the military, he went to work for Montgomery Wards as a store manager for 13 years, managing stores in Newton, KS, Durango and Colorado Springs, CO. He later moved to Kansas City, Missouri and worked as a store manager of Katz Drug Companies. After managing stores he went to work for State Farm Insurance Company as a claims adjuster in 1969 and then in 1973 he became a State Farm Agent in Chanute, KS; which almost brought him back to his hometown of Thayer.
He married Patty (Shepherd-Horton) Elrod in 1969 and had 2 adopted children by a previous marriage, Lisa L. Elrod and Kurtis L. Elrod. He had 2 step-sons, Terry D. Horton and Jeffrey R. Horton and one son Kevin S. Elrod with Patty Elrod. As a younger boy and man he loved to hunt, fish and play golf. He also was a collector of baseball, basketball and football cards.

Darold was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Patty.
There will be a visitation on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home Gibson Chapel 16 N. Forest, Chanute, KS. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 9 a.m. at Countryside Funeral Home Gibson Chapel. Interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri at 2 p.m. following the service. Online condolences may be left at: www.countrysidefh.com. The family suggests memorials to be made to Reachout Christian Church and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home, 16 N.
