David William Span's Obituary
David William Span, 76, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, May 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Caney, Kansas on May 5, 1949, to David and Violet (Simpson) Span, David was the second youngest of sixteen children, a testament to his family's enduring legacy.
David proudly served his country in the United States Army, contributing his strength and dedication during his time in Vietnam. Following his military service, he embarked on a remarkable career spanning over fifty years as a skilled sewing machine mechanic, traveling throughout Kansas and Oklahoma, working in Chanute, Parsons, Oswego, and Miami.
On July 13, 1978, he married the love of his life, Donna Anderson, in Miami, Oklahoma, sharing 46 years of cherished companionship. Together, they embraced the country life, raising horses and creating a home filled with warmth and love.
David possessed a remarkable array of talents. He was an exceptionally gifted painter, inspired by the techniques of Bob Ross, and a self-taught musician proficient in guitar, harmonica, banjo, keyboard, and even the dulcimer, which he crafted himself. His creative spirit extended beyond music and art; he also enjoyed upholstery projects, demonstrating his meticulous nature and craftsmanship.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Violet Span, and his beloved children, David Wayne and Violet. He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Donna; his daughters, Jackie Span and Melissa Span-Hockett; his son, Eric Span; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories and a legacy of love and artistic brilliance.
Following David’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home. No services are scheduled at this time.
