Dolores Philomina Peters' Obituary
Dolores Philomina Peters, 96, passed away on December 18, 2023 at Arma Health & Rehab in Arma, Kansas.
She was born November 16, 1927, in Hanover, Kansas to Joseph and Clara Menke. When she was 6 years old the family moved to Wellington, KS, where she spent most of her school years. The family later moved to a farm in Humboldt, KS.
She married Ben Peters on August 30, 1952 in Chanute, Kansas. They divorced on August 30, 1971. Following the divorce, she and their four children moved from Hillsboro, Illinois to Chanute, Kansas to be near family. In November 2014, Dolores moved to Pittsburg, KS to reside with her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Bill Lindsay.
Dolores enjoyed volunteer work, sewing, and gardening. Her stories of growing up on a farm, much of it during the depression, were both entertaining and informative. She said that as a child she would “pick” her mother’s flowers right below the blossom, but her mother told her if she ever scolded a child of her own for doing that, she would spank her.
Dolores worked 20 years as a field representative for the Southeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging in Chanute. Prior to that she made countless custom-made cookies and cakes for birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries.
Survivors include sons Benjamin Peters and David Peters, of Pittsburg, daughters Suzanne (Bill) Lindsay, of Pittsburg, and Angela (Tom) Alsop, of Overland Park; grandson, Kyle (Rachel) Alsop, of Prairie Village, and granddaughter Megan (Ryan) Meyer of Belton, MO; sisters Marianne Westerman of Iola, Lois Worley, and Edna (Jim) Morris of Chanute, brother, Delmer (Dorothy) Menke, of Valley Center, and several nieces and nephews. She was looking forward to the birth of her first great-grandchild in March, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Clara Menke.
She was a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chanute for many years and was a member of the Alter Society at the church.
She will be sadly missed by her family.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rosary to be recited at 11:00 am.
