Donald Laverne Horton's Obituary
Donald “Don” LaVerne Horton, age 89, passed away June 18, 2015 at Neosho Memorial Hospital. Donald was born January 9, 1926 in Emporia, KS, the son of Roy and Elma (Johnson) Horton.
Donald served in the Army during the Korean War, in the headquarters of the commander and chief of the Far East command, General Douglas McArthur, Tokyo, Japan. He was employed by the Western Petrochemical Plant in Chanute, KS for over 30 years. He also owned and operated
Don’s Carpet Cleaning for 25 years. He retired in 1988.
He was married to Helen Louise Larson on January 15, 1956 in Colfax Baptist Church. They were happily married for over 47 years. She preceded him in death on July 15, 2003. Along with his wife, he enjoyed traveling, bicycling, reading, and raising flowers.
Donald was a member of the First Baptist Church and a former active member of Colfax Baptist Church for over 50 years before its closing. He was also a member of the VFW, and the American Legion.
Survivors include his son; Larry Horton and wife Tracey of Chanute, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Roy and Elma, his wife; Helen, sister; Betty Horton, and many cousins, uncles and aunts.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Chanute. Visitation will be held Monday, June 22, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home Gibson Chapel. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by Chanute American Legion.
Family requests memorials to either First Baptist Church or Cherry Street Youth Center and may be mailed to the funeral home at 16 N. Forest, Chanute, KS.
