My condolences to Doris's extended family, many of whom I knew well growing up. Doris was a very nice person who cooked at Hillcrest school which I attended in the 50s. She did a great job of taking care of us for several years.Two of her daughters were in my classes for several years, Janice and Carolyn, also very nice. Further, I grew up with the Oscar Swiler family living one mile away. We had many great times as youngsters. I was just plain lucky to grow up around such good people. I take the Tribune which is delivered to Kansas City a few days late, so I did not see it in time to come to the funeral. Had I known in time, I would have been there.

I have so many wonderful memories of spending the summers with Grandma when I was growing up. My momma and daddy would put me and my little brother on a bus or a passenger train and send us to Grandma's house for a few weeks every summer. We always had so much fun. She taught me how to bake and instilled in me the joy of cooking for my family and friends. I still use her homemade pie crust recipe and I get rave reviews everytime I make one. Almost every time I would make a pie, I would call Grandma and tell her that I was making a pie and it made me think of her. I will still think of her each time I make one but I will no longer be able to call her and tell her. I think she will know though.
I lost my very first tooth while I was visiting grandma one summer. I started crying and ran inside to tell her. She told me that all little girls lose their teeth and then they grow big girl teeth. I responded by saying...but Grandma, I don't want all of my teeth to fall out.
Another memory I have is when we came to visit Grandma, my little brother and I always wanted to "go to town" even though we lived in a big city. Grandma would say, "Are you ready to go into town?" We would get so excited when she would ask us this. We would jump into the car and she would take us to Cardinal Drug Store and she would buy each of us a small toy and then take us to Sonic and Grandma, my little brother and myself would each get a corn dog and tater tots. Those were the best corn dogs and tater tots ever because we were sharing them and spending time with the best Grandma EVER!
I have so many other memories but can't tell them all. I will keep them in my heart so I can always remember our times together. I pray that I can be half the Grandma to my grand babies as she was to us. Grandma was so loving and kind and I never heard her say a negative thing about anyone. I will miss you so very much Grandma. I was your very first grand daughter and I know that we had a special bond that will live on forever. You have made a wonderful and beautiful family Grandma. Our goal is to always make you proud of us. Please tell momma and daddy that I love them and miss them for me. I love you Grandma. You've always been the best!!!

I had the privilege of meeting Doris and sharing a meal with her last summer. What an honor to have finally met the Mother of my friend, Steve McKelvy. What a sweet lady! Thanks to Steve, I have enjoyed Snickerdoodle cookies made from Doris' recipe. No better cookie can be found.

I first knew Doris's Nieces, the Tyler girls. They lived across the field from us and were our very good friends. Then I knew Doris as the food's leader for the Willing Workers 4-H Club. I remember going to her home for cooking meetings, and I remember when she taught us to make Banana Cream Pudding. I remember demonstrating making Chocolate Chip cookies in her kitchen for a foods meeting. I also looked forward to working with Doris in the Hillcrest School Lunch program for 1/2 hour per day. A student got the privilege of working just before lunch daily, doing such things such as wrapping silverware or cutting butter pats. Doris was always a gentle, encouraging person for all her family, friends, and neighbors. She is a lovely lady, and will be greatly missed!
