Ernest "Ernie" Lee Smith's Obituary
Ernest "Ernie" Lee Smith, a beloved resident of Chanute, Kansas, passed away peacefully at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on January 17, 1937, in Chanute, he was the son of Verlin and Doris (Ogden) Smith. Ernie was a lifelong resident of Chanute, attending the local schools and dedicating 34 years of service to the City of Chanute's Sanitation Department.
Throughout his life, Ernie was known for his quiet strength and gentle nature. He found joy in the simple pleasures: cheering on his beloved Kansas City Chiefs, losing himself in classic Western films, and enjoying leisurely walks. These simple joys reflected his appreciation for the everyday beauty of life.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Verlin and Doris Smith; his sisters, Dona Rose and Beth McMillen; and his brother, Ralph Smith. He is survived by his siblings: Judith (Larry) McGhee, Buddy (Jan) Smith, Raymond (Nancy) Smith, Joy (Steve) Small, David (Cheryl) Smith, and Phillip (Valerie) Smith; and numerous cherished nieces and nephews. His memory will be lovingly cherished by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at Countryside Funeral Home, 101 N. Highland Ave., Chanute, on Wednesday, June 18th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with the family present to greet friends. Graveside services will be held at Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas, on Thursday, June 19th at 1:00 pm.
