Ernestine M. Lafferty's Obituary
Ernestine M. Lafferty, age 89, a resident of Fredonia since 1945, passed away April 9, 2008 at the Fredonia Regional Hospital. Ernestine was born on July 31, 1918 to Ernest Leland and Madelaine (Scott) Howell in Geary, Oklahoma. The family later moved to Edmond, Oklahoma where Ernestine attended Central State University. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1939.
On February 27, 1937 in Edmond, Oklahoma, she married Rex A. Lafferty. He preceded her in death on September 10, 1995. Ernestine taught second grade and later high school French and reading for sixteen years in the Fredonia school system. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She was known for her sense of humor and generosity.
Her survivors include:
One son: William E. Lafferty of Seattle, Washington and his partner Lewis R. Myers
Two daughters:
Madelaine L. Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado and her husband Carl W. Smith
Patricia L. Ballard of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and her husband David E. Ballard
Three granddaughters:
Stephanie Smith of Fort Collins, Colorado
Allison Foster of Colorado Springs, Colorado
Leslie Ballard of New York, New York
One grandson:
Will Foster of Colorado Springs, Colorado
In addition to her husband Rex, she was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Scott Howell.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, April 11, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Fredonia, Kansas with Pastor Steve Brodbeck officiating. Private interment will be at the Fredonia City Cemetery. Family suggests contributions to the Christmas Basket Fund at the First Christian Church and may be left in care of the funeral home.
