Eugene Ross Murray's Obituary
Eugene “Gene†Murray, age 84, formerly of Wichita, Kansas passed away Monday, October 15, 2007 at Medicalodge of Eureka in Eureka, Kansas. Gene was born January 30, 1923 in Harper, Kansas the son of Ross Irving and Sarah Elnora (Brown) Murray.
Gene was a graduate of Harper High School, class of 1941. After graduation, Gene enrolled at the University of Kansas. Gene put his college career on hold at the end of 1942 to enlist in the Army Air Corp during WWII. After the war Gene enrolled in Wichita State University and received a bachelor’s degree in business.
In 1949, Gene accepted a position with the Internal Revenue Service in Wichita. He held various positions with the IRS such as tax auditor, pension/trust consultant, and as an instructor to new employees at the various regional offices of the IRS. After thirty years of service, Gene retired in 1978.
Gene met the love of his life, Peggy Eleanor Graves, at a Saturday night dance in his hometown. Gene and Peggy were married on June 27, 1948 in Anthony, Kansas. They made their home in Wichita, Kansas. Gene was a member of the University United Methodist Church. He enjoyed square dancing, working on cars, gardening, and woodworking.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, his parents, one brother Graydon Murray, and one sister Audrey Murray. He is survived by his daughter Roslyn Stewart and husband Paul of Howard, Kansas, two granddaughters Kristen Bunch and husband Michael of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kelly Stewart of Pittsburg, Kansas and one sister Dorothy Hawk of Wichita, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at the Antioch Christian Church in Wichita, Kansas with pastors John King and Robin Haines officiating. Viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to service. Private family interment will be held at the Resthaven Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to either WSU Foundation or Harry Hynes Hospice and may be sent to Countryside Funeral Home, PO Box 247, Fredonia, Kansas 66736.
