Evonna Dorene Catterson's Obituary
Evonna Dorene (Huffman) Catterson, age 86, of Chanute, passed away November 27, 2015 at NMRMC in Chanute, KS. Dorene was born July 7, 1929 in Preston, Kansas the daughter of Sebathic Walter and Ruby Irene (Hamm) Huffman.
Dorene graduated from Garden City High School in 1946 and went on to business school in Wichita, KS. In1948, she was joined in marriage to Oliver Catterson Sr. in Cottonwood Falls, KS. Dorene and Oliver lived in Yates Center, KS; Lawrence, KS; Arizona; New Mexico; Texas and later moved to Chanute. Dorene was a homemaker and worked in medical records at the hospital for 13 years before retiring.
Dorene and Oliver enjoyed camping and did so for about 35 years after they retired. They would go to Texas and camp during the winter months, making a lot of new friends while doing that. She loved to take the grandkids camping and boating at Grand Lake, and to Branson and Worlds of Fun, and just spending time with her family. Dorene spent many years in children’s ministry at Living Word Assembly. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chanute and a member of the American Baptist Women’s group, serving as treasurer for many years. Dorene was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for over 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Dorene is survived by her husband; a son, Jim Catterson and wife Lynette of Chanute; a daughter, Cheryl Catterson-Lewis of Chanute; four grandchildren: Greg of Corpus Christi, Jenny and husband Jeff of Chanute, Marty Corpus Christi and Bryan and wife Suzanne of Chanute; 8 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and sister-in-laws.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Chanute. Interment will be at the Yates Center Cemetery in Yates Center, KS.
Family requests memorials to Cherry Street Youth Center and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home at 101 N. Highland, Chanute, KS. Countryside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
