Hazel Bernice Cain's Obituary
Hazel Bernice Cain, age 100 of Moline, KS passed away August 25, 2020 at her home.
Bernice was born northeast of Longton, KS on May 30, 1920 to Otis and Viola (Keller) Buchanan, the youngest of three children. In 1925, the family moved to Elk Falls, where she attended grade school at Stone school, then graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1937.
On April 28, 1939, Bernice married Paul Cain in Eureka, KS. Soon afterwards, the couple moved to New Albany, KS, where they had a grocery store, feed and ice house. They left New Albany and headed to Parsons, KS in 1942. They moved a couple of more times, but ended up back in Elk County, where they would spend the rest of their lives. Bernice and Paul raised 3 daughters and a son, and were married 53 years, until his passing in February 1992.
Bernice was an active lady, being a member of the Elk Falls Methodist Church for over 72 years, the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 70 years, the Kansas Rural Letter Carrier’s Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Moline Chamber of Commerce. She loved and held close to her heart her friends and family, and would tell anyone that family was always more important than money. Memories of her will be cherished, and she will forever be loved and missed by everyone that knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul Cain; Sons-in-law, Leslie Ford, Ray Myers, Tom Mills; grandson, Steve Ford; sister, Verna Wilson; and brother, Everett Buchanan
Visitation for Bernice will be held on Friday, August 28, 2020 from 5-7pm at Countryside Funeral Home, Howard, KS.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 10:00 am at the Elk Falls United Methodist Church in Elk Falls, KS.
Interment will follow at Elk Falls Cemetery, Elk Falls, KS with an Eastern Star service.
At Bernice’s request, memorial contributions may be made to the Elk Falls United Methodist Church or the Moline Chamber of Commerce and can be mailed to or left with the funeral home.
