Herbert "Chick" Shores' Obituary
Herbert “Chick” H. Shores, 77, of Chanute, KS, passed away after a lengthy illness on June 13, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS.
Herbert was born October 14, 1939, the son of Herbert and Vivian Lee (Taylor) Shores, in Kansas City, KS. He married Judy (Fulps) Shores at the Nazarene Church in Chanute in 1958 and they enjoyed 58 years of marriage. She survives him at their home.
Better known to his many friends and family as “Chick”, Herbert was a quiet but exceedingly friendly and instantly likeable man who was a great friend to everyone who knew him. Chick served his country proudly in the U.S. Army for two years. He was a hard working and talented carpenter, mechanic, plumber, electrician, and the list goes on. He retired from UPS after 20 years. Chick had an easy Paul Newman smile, dark hair and eyes that were reminiscent of Dean Martin and the lean, weathered body of a cowboy. He loved hot rods, fishing and baseball. Chick was a stoic and hardworking man that always did the right thing and didn’t have to deliberate much. He just measured the situation with his vast common sense, no nonsense intellect and set forth using one or a few of his many skill sets and usually had the problem solved before most others knew there was a problem. He didn’t brag, though he had every right, he didn’t seek attention, though the acts he performed certainly did. Everything Chick did was well done…quality. Without fail, folks would admire the quality of anything Chick set his mind to and upon finding out it was his work, would just quietly confirm, “Oh…of course that was Chick. His children felt blessed to have been adopted by him and Judy and would tell you there was no better father in the whole world. His wife, Judy, would tell you there was not a more loving and able husband. His in-laws thought of him as a brother or a son of their own and his siblings looked at him as nothing less than a hero. The world is less interesting and decidedly less honorable place without him and Heaven is Celebrating. Chick was a member of the Elks, and the American Legion.
