Herman John Howell's Obituary
Herman John Howell, age 94, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas. He was born on April 24, 1916 in Oak Valley, Kansas the son Earton “Deed†and Helen (Knapp) Howell.
He served from 1942 to the summer of 1945 in the Red Arrow Infantry Division in the Philippines, Australia and New Guinea during World War II. On September 26, 1945 Herman was united in marriage to Thelma Irene McCreary in Independence, Kansas. The lived on the farm west of Longton, Kansas until 1993, then they moved into Longton. Herman was a farmer and rancher raising cattle and Registered Quarter Horses. He also worked on the Elk County Road Crew, at Martin Marietta as a night watchman and managed the Alfalfa Mill in Longton. After he retired he did what he loved best, working on various ranches in the area working cattle. He rode a horse into his late 80’s. He was one of the last “old cowboys.†Herman also loved to fish.
Herman is survived by his wife Thelma Howell of Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, two daughters Janis Hawk of Longton, Kansas and Joyce Miller of Sycamore, Kansas, five grandchildren and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one grandson and one great grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2011 at the Countryside-Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas with Rev. Gene Benefiel of the Buxton Christian Church officiating. Interment will be private at Longton Cemetery. Family suggests contributions be made to the American Heart Association and may be left with the funeral home.
