Howard Dean Spurrier's Obituary
Howard Dean Spurrier, age 81, of Chanute, KS, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017 at NMRMC in Chanute, KS. Howard was born on September 10, 1935 in rural Humboldt, KS the son of Cecil and Margaret (Baker) Spurrier. He graduated from Humboldt High School. Howard joined the Army and served in Japan from 1955-1958.
In 1959, Howard married Eleanor E. Tripp and they had 3 children together. They later divorced. On January 1, 1978, Howard married Mary K. (Russell) Spurrier in Chanute, KS.
Howard worked for the Chanute Police department from 1962-1984 and retired as a Sergeant. While working at the police department, he also hauled water to rural homes in the area from 1962 – 1978. After retirement, Howard opened up Spurrier’s Liquor. Howard also worked for Corky’s Used Cars and later enjoyed spending his days helping out at Cars R Us.
Howard enjoyed owning and driving stock cars and raising and racing quarter horses. He was a member of the Ambassador Christian Church, Kansas Peace Officer Association, American Legion, Elks and Masonic Temple & Shriners.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary K. Spurrier and sister, Evelyn Uthmann.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home Gibson Chapel on 16 N. Forest in Chanute. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the Ambassador Christian Church in Chanute, KS. The Chanute Honor Guard will be in charge of military honors. Memorials have been suggested to American Cancer Association, Castaways Animal Shelter or Ambassador Christian Church and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.
