Jack Michael Taylor's Obituary
Jack Michael Taylor, a lifelong resident of Chanute, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the age of 73. Born in Larned, Kansas, on January 20, 1952, to George and Gladys (Stone) Taylor, Jack’s life was a testament to his dedication to family, community, and his many passions.
He graduated from Chanute High School in 1971 and at the age of 17, proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Following his service, Jack worked as a machinist for 10 years at Churchill before embarking on a 23-year career with USD 413, where he dedicated his skills and tireless work ethic. Through the years he was well known as “Mr. Jack.” He retired with a well-earned reputation for his commitment and service.
On January 21, 1977, Jack married the love of his life, Shirley Bowker, in Chanute. Their 45 years together were a testament to their enduring love and companionship, a bond that sustained them until Shirley’s passing in August 2022.
Jack was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. His hobbies were a reflection of his hardworking nature and appreciation for the outdoors; he loved woodworking, hunting, fishing, camping, restoring old guns, working on old cars, and simply being outside.
Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Taylor; his son, William “Bill” Taylor; his parents, George Taylor and Gladys Rehmert; and his stepmother, Naomi Taylor. He is survived by his children, Christopher (Stefanie) Taylor and Betty (Jason) McMurray, and daughter in-law, Melinda Taylor; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his siblings, David (Jody) Rehmert, Terry (Tammy) Taylor, Verle (Pam) Rehmert, Margaret (Dennis) Lang, Verlen Kiesow, and Tina (Mack) McNett. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution can be made in Jack’s name to the Cancer Center of Kansas-Chanute, and can be left with the funeral home.
