Jack D. Wilson's Obituary
Jack D. Wilson, age 86, passed away at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, KS on January 9, 2015. Jack was born on November 21, 1928 in Chanute, KS; the son of Melvin and Verga (Mayfield) Wilson.
On July 18, 1948 Jack married Phyllis Gahman in Chanute and they had four children together. Jack served in the Army from 1952-1953 and in the Korean War. Jack was employed at Ash Grove Cement and worked there for 46 years before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion Post 170, VFW and served on the American Legion Honor Guard. He was also a member of the First Christian Church in Chanute. Jack enjoyed playing golf, hunting and woodworking. When he was younger, he enjoyed dirt racing west of Chanute. Jack was known as the “Tootsie Roll Man” and he will be greatly missed.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Kevin Wilson and a brother, Gilbert Wilson.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis; son: Greg Wilson of Overland Park, KS; daughters: Tish Allen of Plano, TX and Nan Sheerer of Chanute, KS; three granddaughters: Alexa Hower, Whitney Kerr and Chelsea Allen, and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Jack are planned for Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Chanute, KS; burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute. An open visitation is planned for Monday, January 13, 2015 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home Gibson Chapel in Chanute. The family suggests memorials in Jack’s memory be made to the First Christian Church and sent in care of Countryside Funeral Home 101 N. Highland Chanute, KS 66720.
