Coach Woods treated me like I was one of guys! I was born and raised in Ft Scott Ks. I met Coach from wrestling and weightlifting at Chanute High School . We became friends he was such joy to know. Our paths crossed in Ottawa Ks at a wrestling meet.
Years later I went by his home in Chanute . Had great conversation. His wife was there. From the date of his passing, I think I was fortunate to get to see him one more time.
He had a great sense of humor.
I graduated in 1970. Am so glad I got to know him

Coach woods was my favorite teacher in high school, he was funny and always had nice things to say. We had a lot of fun in drivers Ed. He will be greatly missed.

Jim was an inspiring football coach. One time in a game I was playing center and had my nose bloodied. I ran to the side line to get a replacement, but Coach said no get back in there let the blood run over your face and snarl at the guy opposite you. That will scare him. It worked, and I’ll never forget that lesson.

My days as a competitive powerlifter circa 1988. I still lift to this day because Coach always made the gym fun. He was one of those rare people who made a mark on a time in your life because he was a part of the big meets. Rest in peace Coach. See you in that great weight room in the sky.

One of the few people I truly respected. I learned a lot about growing up and how to be a better person from Coach. I missed his antics and motivating me in weightlifting classes. You will be missed.

Hard to start this without emotion welling up.... My heart and prayers go out to the Woods family...me along with many others had the privilege to be coached and taught by Coach Woods. I am so pleased that I had the opportunity to visit with him 5 years ago....He is so funny ...my God he gave me a medal just for showing up...He knew how to make you feel important and what you did mattered.

Two of the things I remember most about “Woody” are the nicknames assigned and his trumpet skills! As others have stated, his legacy lives on through the positive impact made to countless athletes, musicians, students, student drivers, and fellow jokesters!

I first had Mr. Woods as a teacher for 7th grade social studies (I believe that was the class) at Royster Jr. High and later as a driver's education instructor. His mother-in-law, Jessie Bareis, was my nursery teacher at Colfax Baptist Church, so I later knew Mr. Woods and Jackie through that connection, as well.

Mr. Woods was a gentleman and a man of integrity, although he enjoyed occasionally startling some of his student drivers, including me. I always suspected spelling was not his speciality because in that 7th grade class we were not allowed to ask him how to spell any words. In fact, I believe we were penalized if we did. He always said, "Look it up." Once I was stumped about how to spell the word "usher" and I couldn't figure out how to look it up because I couldn't find it in the "A's", so I think I asked and was subjected to his "wrath".

I am sad to hear of his passing, but was pleased to learn more about the man he was from this obituary. He touched many lives.
