Jean Marie (Smith) McCreedy's Obituary
Jean Marie (Smith) McCreedy, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2015 at Guest House Estates in Chanute, KS. Jean was born on March 14, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Rex William and Verba Edith (Sparks) Smith.
Being raised in Chanute Jean attended grade school at Cross Elementary, Royster Jr. High and graduated from Chanute High School. She then entered the Mercy School of Nursing in Fort Scott, KS to become a registered nurse. (She was accepted into the Cadet Nurse Corp on May 31, 1944; this was a branch of the government used to train nurses for WWII). After graduation from State Board Exams she began work at Johnson’s Hospital in Chanute, later working at Neosho Memorial until her retirement in 1989. On June 15, 1947 she married Frederick Lee McCreedy and they began their family with a son: Michael; and daughter: Janet.
Jean was very active in her community and was a member of the local American Legion, VFW, Order of the Eastern Star, The Elks, The Red Hatters, and the Nurse’s Organization. She also attended the United Brethren Church here in Chanute.
Mrs. McCreedy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Frederick in 1998. She is survived by her children: Michael McCreedy and wife Nancy and Janet Brooksher and husband Harold, all of Chanute, KS; also, brother: Tommy Joe Smith and wife Ida of San Antonio, TX. Her grandchildren: Donald Paul and Michael McCreedy, Jennifer Snow and husband Mike, Jeremy Brooksher and wife Karen and Janae Hughes and husband Paul; great-grandchildren: Carter and Mallory Snow, Elizabeth and Braden Brooksher, Abbigale McCreedy, and Addyson, Mattox and Madison Hughes. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Private Family Funeral Services for Jean McCreedy are planned for the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 at Countryside Funeral Home-Gibson Chapel. Private interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. No formal visitation is planned; the family suggests memorials be made to the Mercy School of Nursing located in Fort Scott, KS.
