Jean Womacks' Obituary
Jean Womacks, beloved sister and aunt, passed away at the age of 78 on March 22, 2017 in the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home at Sedan, Kansas.
She was born in Winfield, Kansas on September 30, 1938 to Doris Henrietta Stark Womacks and Frank Herbert Womacks. Growing up in Moline, Kansas, she attended schools there and graduated in 1956.
She later received a bachelor’s degree in education from Emporia State University, first teaching third grade for a number of years at Moline and then teaching at Cherryvale, Kansas. Upon receiving her master’s degree in Library Science from Emporia State University, she served as a librarian for Wichita Public Schools for 15 years.
After retirement, Jean returned to Moline where she pursued her many hobbies. She was an avid reader and an accomplished wood carver and had a deep interest in Native American history and culture. Early on, she created an “Indian Room” in her home, as she liked to call it, and collected many pieces of Native American art and artifacts. Once she even spent some time with the Osage, living in a teepee and learning about tribal ways.
As a girl, Jean loved horses and participated in barrel racing with other neighborhood kids. She also helped her father, a cattleman, gather cattle and make long drives to summer pasture.
Throughout her life, Jean was an active member of the Moline United Methodist Church and served as historian for the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother William Lee Womacks and more recently by her sister Sue Adamson. Jean will be greatly missed by her nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Happy trails, Jean… until we meet again.
