Joanna Pearl Welch's Obituary
Joanna Pearl Welch, 83, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.
Joanna was born May 5, 1940, in Chanute, the daughter of Nathaniel Harrison and Lena Alta (Williams) Welch, Joanna was a lifetime resident of Chanute.
Joanna was graduate of Chanute High School class of 1958. She later received an associate’s degree from Neosho County Community College, and had a few hours from Pittsburg State and Emporia State, which were hours having to do with the library.
She began her career at the Chanute Public Library as a page in 1957, while she was still a junior in high school. She continued to work there until 2002, when she retired after 45 years.
She was devoted to her “kids.” Whenever asked if she missed the library, she would always say that she missed her kids. Joanna shared a lot of laughter and tears with the kids. Some chose to confide in her whenever they were happy or sad.
Joanna had many hobbies through the years. She enjoyed puzzles, jigsaw and crossword, playing cards, playing bingo, and making quilts.
Joanna is survived by two sisters, Barbara Fulton (Bill) and Patricia Glasgow both of Chanute, two sisters in law, Elizabeth Welch (Richard deceased) and Janice Welch (Junior deceased) and 22 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Rosemary Valliere, Jewel Kay Dennis, Lola Stoll, Norma Jean Welch; brothers, Richard Lee Welch, Nathan Junior Welch, Acey Leon Welch, and Stoney Allen Welch.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Countryside Funeral Home. Services will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 2:00 pm at The First Baptist Church Good News Center in Chanute with burial to immediately follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at: www.countrysidefh.com.
