Joyce McKinsey's Obituary
Joyce Virtress Jordan McKinsey of Chanute, KS went home to be with Jesus the morning of Thursday, December 4th, 2014 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO in their "Comfort Care” program. Illness was sudden and death was unexpected. She was born October 18, 1931 in Akron, Colorado to Joseph L. and Virtress (Dixon) Jordan. She was the second oldest of 5 children. When she was 5 years old the family moved to Kansas. When she was 12 their dad was killed in a vehicle accident. When she was 18 their mom married Riley Baldwin of Galesburg, KS.
After her family moved from Colorado to Kansas she lived in Tyro, Coffeyville, Thayer and Neodesha and attended school in Thayer, KS. In 1969, she attended NCCC and received her GED. In addition to obtaining her GED she also took some college classes. Joyce had a real love for learning and loved technology, she was fascinated with computers and smart phones.
On Sept. 10, 1949 she married Edward O. McKinsey. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999 and preceded her in death on June 5, 2000.
Joyce called Chanute home for the last 50 plus years. She worked at Burlington Sewing Factory in Chanute, Kustom Music, sewing “NAUGA’s”. Her last employment was at Everbrite Electronics. She retired in 1996 to devote more time to family and her quilting business: Leisure Quilting which she did until her death. Joyce loved to sew for others, she made many long lasting friendships through her business as well as providing material memories for her family. Her true passion was her family and the children. She loved going to birthday parties, ball games, 4-H with her grandchildren, activities at Chanute Christian Academy.
Joyce was an active and faithful member of Ambassador Christian Church in Chanute she also attended Wednesday night church at Faith Bible. Over the years she taught Sunday School, opened her home for visitors to the church and often gave other church members a ride. Church was work of love for Joyce and she wanted everyone to be able to attend and receive Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 50yrs, Edward Owen McKinsey. Her parents; step-father: Riley Baldwin, sister: Jewell (Jordan) Johnson, and, brother; Joseph (Joe) Jordan, brother-in-laws; John Johnson, Larry D and Jim McKinsey, sister-in-law; Carlene (Haynes) Jordan and grand-son-in-law: Robert (Rob) Finley
She is survived by her children; Phyliss L. Enos and husband Harold of Chanute, Edward R. McKinsey and his wife Brenda of Erie; brothers: John Jordan of Chanute, Jerry Jordan and wife Mary of Chanute; sister-in-law: Evelyn (McKinsey) Grogan and husband Max of Thayer; grandchildren: Samantha L.(Enos) Finley of Walnut, Scott E. McKinsey and wife Trena of Chanute, Gary E. Enos and wife Shara of Chanute, Jason D. McKinsey and wife Stephanie of Chanute and Rayanne C.J McKinsey of Erie; great-grandchildren: Taya McKinsey, Carolyn Enos, Shelby Finley, Tucker McKinsey, Elizabeth Enos and Christopher Enos; step-great-grandchildren: Logan Wolken, Ashley Colston and husband Mat and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews plus a few that called her grandma.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 from 5:00-7:00 P.M at Countryside Funeral Home Johnson Chapel located at 101 N. Highland, Chanute. Funeral Service will be on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at Ambassador Christian Church 4001 S. Johnson Road, Chanute. Burial will follow at Harrison Cemetery, Thayer.
The family suggest memorials be made to the Ambassador Christian Church and Chanute Christian Academy and may be sent in care of Countryside Funeral Home.
