Laveta Coleen Baughn's Obituary
The family of LaVeta C. Brooks Baughn of Chanute, Kansas is saddened to announce her passing on June 12, 2025 at the age of 81. LaVeta was born July 29, 1943 and raised in Erie, KS where she completed her elementary through high school education. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Baughn, her father Wesley Brooks, mother Florence Brooks, and five brothers (Jack, Mervin, Richard, Dale, and Charles). Surviving are two sisters, Doris Stitt (Chanute, KS) and Eileen Petty, (Gardner, KS) sister-in-laws Joyce Brooks (Siloam Springs, AR) and June Brooks (Clovis, NM). Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
After LaVeta graduated high school, she worked at Litwin's clothing store in Chanute, KS and worked as a waitress. LaVeta married Charles J. Baughn on June 26, 1975. They were married for thirty years. Together they would travel to Texas where they would camp and fish with many friends. LaVeta was very social and enjoyed spending her time in a bowling league and was a member of the Mother's club of Chanute. LaVeta had numerous hobbies including the challenge of putting together 1000 piece puzzles. She enjoyed baking birthday and wedding cakes,loved creating crafts, and attending craft fairs. She loved summer trips to Branson with her sisters Doris and Eileen (a.k.a the three triplets). She also enjoyed summer trips to Arkansas and New Mexico to visit her brother's and their families. She enjoyed attending birthday and holiday parties with her husband's family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she dearly loved.
In her later years, she enjoyed eating breakfast and lunch at the "Grain Bin" in Chanute, talking and greeting with people she knew or even someone she did not know.
In a nutshell, LaVeta loved her friends and family and enjoyed the time she spent with them.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home. Visitation will take place on Friday, June 27th with the family greeting friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Inurnment will follow at Elsmore Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made in Laveta’s name to the Alzheimer's Association.
