Lois Alberta Squire's Obituary
Lois Alberta Squire, 94, of Humboldt, Kansas, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2017, at Diversicare of Chanute.
Lois was born February 25, 1923, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Thomson) Baeten. She grew up attending Prairie Center grade school in Allen County and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1941.
Lois married George Chester Squire in Lawrence, Kansas in 1941. After their marriage, she and George made their home in Bottineau, North Dakota where they farmed and started a grain cleaning business as well as an aerial spray service. After her divorce, she moved back to Kansas with her family. She worked a few years for an oil field research company in Chanute as a secretary. Later, she was employed by the State of Kansas as a receptionist and secretary for the Fourth Division Kansas Highway Patrol office in Chanute. She retired in 1988 after 30 years of service from the patrol.
During her son’s formative years, she was committed to supporting and attending their activities from academic and sporting events to 4-H involvement. In addition to the life principles being taught in the home, she supplemented their spiritual education and development by regular church attendance.
Lois was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was an active member and held offices in the Eastern Star, the Humboldt High School Alumni Association, the Humboldt Historical society, the South Logan FCE, the United Methodist Women and volunteered at the Iola Hospital.
Some of Lois’s present and past enjoyments and hobbies included mowing her yard, cooking, gardening and canning, working on ceramics, quilting and making her special three kinds of Christmas candy to share with family and friends.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, her brother Kenneth Baeten, a great uncle Raymond Thomson and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Carol (Wolford) Squire.
Survivors include her three sons, Dr. George Squire Jr. of Middleton, Idaho, and Curtis (Karen) Squire of Joplin, Missouri and Dr. Jean (Denice) Squire of Westfield, Indiana and her grandchildren: Marla (Alan) Egbert of Weiser, Idaho; Marilee (Brad) Simon of Gilbert Arizona; Misty (Tim) Covington of Salt Lake City, Utah; Marcee Clark of Middleton, Idaho; Michael (Alisa) Squire of St. Paul Minnesota; Kristi (Kyle) Roberts of Olathe, Kansas; Anthony Squire of Westfield, Indiana; Adrienne (Anthony) Morelli of Westfield, Indiana and 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great- great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Ada Baeten, Iola, Kansas, a niece, Linda (Bob) Hill, Iola, Kansas and nephew, Lauren ( Helen) Baeten Topeka, Kansas and 5 great- nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Countryside Funeral Home in Humboldt, KS. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Humboldt, Kansas. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt.
