Loyd L. Baughman's Obituary
Loyd L. Baughman, 94, died on Saturday, October 31, 2015 in Hugoton, KS. He was born July 12, 1921 in rural Howard, KS to Thomas and Gladys (Loyd) Baughman. He graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1939, then attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS. In July, 1942 he joined the Enlisted Reserve Corps and was called up to active duty in March, 1943. He served as a P-47 armorer with the 368th Fighter Group in the European Theater in World War II, returning to Kansas in September, 1945 with an honorable discharge in November, 1945. While teaching in Woodbine, KS he met Joan Louise Poister and they were married on December 27, 1949.
In 1959 they returned to Longton, KS to teach and run the family ranch after the death of his father. He held the position of Postmaster in Longton for 20+ years before retiring and continued to be an active Angus cattle rancher until a few years before his death.
He was a member of the Longton United Methodist Church, VFW, American Legion, Elk County Rodeo Association, Experimental Aircraft Association and the National Association of Postmasters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Marieta & Tom Mahon; brother–in-law Lyle Poister and brother-in-law Leroy Menges.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter Janice (Bruce) Frahm of Colby, KS; Son, Gary (Joyce) Baughman of Hugoton, KS; son, Charles (Margaret Froelich) Baughman of Dodge City, KS; son, Kenton (Marcia) Baughman of Lincoln, NE; grandsons, Jonathan (Teay) Frahm of Thailand; Karlyn Frahm of Colby, KS; Duane Baughman of Manhattan, KS; Ethan (Christy) Baughman of St. Louis, MO, grandaughters Kendra (Jonny) Piening and Christine (Bobby) Truhe of Lincoln, NE, six great grandchildren; Evelyn & James Baughman, Joshua and Vivian Piening, Aliyah Frahm and Sophie Truhe; sister-in-law Nadine Poister of Butler, MO and sister-in-law Carol (Gary) Williams of Hayden, CO.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside Services with military honors will take place at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, KS on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 11:00 am. Family suggests memorials to the Longton United Methodist Church or the Friends of Elk Falls to be used for repair of the Elk Falls gymnasium, and may be left with the funeral home or mailed to P.O. Box 1233, Howard, KS. 67349.
