Luis Ortiz's Obituary
Luis Ortiz, 95, of Chanute, KS passed away on January 3, 2018 at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center. He was born on October 17, 1922 in Saucillo, Chihuahua, Mexico and was raised by Romana Ortiz. Upon returning home from serving in the Army, he married Esther Serrato. She survives at their home.
Luis was a kind, loving, easy-going man who never met a stranger. He was quick to smile and liked by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he had very little formal education, he joined the U.S. Army, earned his American citizenship while serving this country, and educated himself through his military experience. He was a realist, yet very wise, and loved telling his children and grandchildren his army stories or about his many adventures in other countries. For over 30 years, he worked in building maintenance for the State of Kansas, at the TB hospital and Social and Rehabilitation Services. Luis was a family man, first and foremost, and would choose his family over anything.
