Mable Irene Oakleaf's Obituary
Mable Oakleaf, age 88, formerly of rural Mound Valley, Kansas, passed away Monday, February 27, 2012 at the Howard Twilight Manor in Howard, Kansas where she had been a resident for the past several weeks. She was born April 19, 1923 at rural Oswego, Kansas the daughter of Walter and Eva (Holly) Umbarger. In 1928 her family moved to Altamont, Kansas where she spent her childhood years and attended school.
On February 15, 1942 she was united in marriage to Linnaeus Oakleaf at Wichita, Kansas. In 1945 they made their home in rural Mound Valley where she lived until 2009 when she moved to Howard. Mable and her husband farmed until 1964 when they opened the Oakleaf Insurance Agency in Mound Valley, they operated that business until their retirement in 1982. Linnaeus died in 2008.
She was a member of the Altamont Baptist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, the Mound Valley Historical Society, the local Pinochle and Bridge clubs and had served many years helping with the Labette County Election Board. Mable was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She enjoyed traveling, making crafts, playing cards and spending time with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Mable is survived by a daughter Jo Lynn Slaughter and husband Michael of Tucson, Arizona, two sons; Sam Oakleaf and wife Becky of Howard, Kansas and Karl Oakleaf of Claremore, Oklahoma, two grandchildren; Helena Stormont and husband Scott of Americus, Kansas and David Oakleaf of Nashville, Tennessee, two great grandchildren Tripp and Sydney Stormont of Americus, Kansas and one brother Robert Umbarger of Dallesport, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters and one brother.
Cremation has taken place and private memorial service will be held at a later date. Family suggests memorials to either the Howard Senior Center or Mound Valley Historical Society and may be sent to the funeral home.
