Marjorie Rose (Majerus) Seiler's Obituary
Marjorie Rose (Majerus) Seiler was born to Henry and Bertha (Lies) Majerus on December 5, 1920, at Colwich, KS and passed away on March 7, 2021 in Fredonia, KS.
Marjorie was the oldest of 4 girls and so was her dad’s helper with the livestock and farming. She tells of her uncle hauling grain to Goddard, KS with a team and wagon and her pay for the day would be a 5 cent candy bar and a 5 cent pop. On February 9, 1944, she and Lawrence Seiler were married and she continued farming side by side with him on a farm south of Maize, KS. She loved the Hereford cattle and the only machinery she refused to operate was the combine. She always had a huge garden and canned hundreds of quarts of fruits and vegetables and raised chickens to butcher and always had a hundred hens for eggs to trade for groceries. In 1960, the family moved to a farm north of Fredonia, KS. Times were changing and the large flock of hens was changed out for milk cows.
Some of the young men they hired as hay crews and silage crews in those days are still raving about the wonderful meals she prepared for them. She excelled at making bread, pies, especially meringue pies, cinnamon rolls and divinity candy. She always made sure the hay haulers had hamburgers for a 10 o’clock break in the morning, a big noon meal, fresh homemade doughnuts or some other delicacy in the afternoon and then if need be she fixed them supper. That along with getting the cows milked and the gardening done and keeping her own 4 kids busy helping.
In 1972 they sold the farm and moved back to Wichita. She eventually went to work for Cessna in the upholstery department where she was able to use her outstanding sewing skills. While working at Cessna she lived with and took care of her mother. In the evenings she would load up a carload of ladies and off they went to play bingo somewhere almost every night of the week. She retired from Cessna at the age of 67, moved back to Fredonia and built the new home she lived in until moving to Morningstar Care Home in July of 2020.
Retirement didn’t slow her down but gave her the opportunity to travel. She went by chartered bus trips to all 50 states. In between she belonged to the Gold Dust Quilters, the Sacred Heart Quilters, past member of the Fredonia Promenaders square dance club, Sacred Heart Altar Society and was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Not much happened in Fredonia without her being there. She was a Grand Marshall for Homecoming in 2018 and delivered Meals on Wheels until she was 90. If she wasn’t quilting or playing Bunko she was playing cards and she was a challenge, you better be on your toes to play with her. Then there was afternoon and sometimes morning coffee with her friends. Until activities closed because of COVID she was playing cards 4 evening a week.
