Melvin Daniel Spangler's Obituary
Melvin Daniel Spangler age, 79, of Chanute, KS passed away surrounded by his family, Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Diversicare in Chanute. Melvin was born January 11, 1935 in Iuka, IL the son of Robert and Verda (Daniels) Spangler.
After high school Melvin joined the Navy and spent the next 20 years defending our country. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During that time he earned numerous commendations, including four bronze stars. After retiring from the Navy, he spent 18 years as a bus driver for the Seminole County School District in Florida.
On July 4, 1956 he married Shelby “Jean” Bryant at the Wamac Baptist Church in Centralia, IL. Melvin enjoyed fishing, gardening, golfing, and most of all spending time with his family.
Melvin is survived by his wife Jean, daughters; Mary Holbin and husband Rick of Tampa, FL, Sharon Jean Spangler of Chanute, KS, Debra Norman and husband Mickey of Noblesville, IN, brother; Dale Spangler of IL, sisters; Corrine Douglas and Verdetta Pribble both of IL, grandchildren; Maranda Collins and husband Wade of Chanute, KS, Crystal Golay and husband Mike of Chanute, KS, Jessica Holbin of Tampa, FL, Erin Campbell and husband Nathan of Tampa, FL, Nicholas Norman and wife Jamie of IN, Randal Norman of IN, and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.
Services will be held Friday, February 28, 2014, 9:30 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Chanute, KS. Interment will follow at Neosho County Memorial Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to the First Christian Church Food Pantry and may be sent to or left with the funeral home.
