Mildred Anna Ostrander's Obituary
Mildred A. Ostrander, 88, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away on September 27, 2018 in Topeka, Kansas, where she has lived since September 2017. Mildred was born January 9, 1930 in Courtland, Kansas, the daughter of Johan (John) and Anna Ekstrom.
Mildred married Charles K. Ostrander on April 19, 1947, her only love. Mildred loved gardening, cooking, and reading. Her Swedish prayer was a long-lasting tradition during holiday dinners. Mildred worked at Burlington, Nu Way, Kustom Electronics, and others. She was active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (“VFW”) and Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in retirement.
Mildred was proud of her Swedish ancestry and her Lutheran faith. Her father Johan Arvid Ekstrom immigrated to the U.S. from Sweden to work on a family farm in Courtland, and it is there he met the family’s daughter, Anna, who became his wife. Mildred worked numerous jobs at the same time while raising her children by herself, she achieved her most important goal of providing the opportunity for her children to pursue an advanced education and a better life. She will be loved forever.
Mildred is survived by her children, Kathy Chase (Ron) in Baldwin City, Lana Goste in Frontenac, and Bion Ostrander (Susan) in Topeka, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren that she loved. She was the last survivor of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles (1961), her brothers Arne, John, and Raynold, and sisters Mary and LaVerda.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 from 6-7:30 pm at Countryside Funeral Home (Johnson Chapel), 101 N. Highland, Chanute. Memorial Service will be on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at 11 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 1202 W. Main St., Chanute, KS. Mildred will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery, Humboldt, Kansas at a later date. Online condolences may be left at: www.countrysidefh.com.
