O'Neal "Sonny" Smith Jr.'s Obituary
O’Neal “Sonny” Smith, Jr., 76, of Chanute passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at Via Christi St. Joseph in Wichita. Sonny was born on October 21, 1947, in Chanute the son of O’Neal, Sr. and Helen (Potts) Smith.
Sonny grew up in Chanute and graduated from Chanute High School in 1966. In his younger years Sonny enjoyed fishing, shooting his bow, and riding his motorcycle. On September 1, 1979, Sonny married Barbara Curls at Malcolm Center in Chanute, Barbara survives at the home.
Sonny was a very hard-working man and he spent his working years doing road construction and road maintenance for KDOT. When Sonny was not busy at work, he loved to barbecue, watch television, and most importantly watch his children grow up.
Sonny will always be remembered as a very quiet, sweet, and loving man. He is greatly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Sonny is survived by his wife Barbara Smith of Chanute, his son O’Neal Smith III of Chanute, step-sons Alexander Curls and Aaron Curls of Kansas, his sister Mary Kay of Overland Park, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents.
