I would not attempt to improve on Kenny Cole's excellent tribute. His guestbook post captured my own thoughts almost perfectly. I'll simply add that to me, Pat Mitchell was not just a favorite teacher, but also one of the most unforgettable people I've ever encountered. I was blessed to be among those who first knew her in the classroom, then as our school guidance counselor. Nine years later, having returned to Decatur to work with at-risk students myself, we now had the rare privilege of becoming reacquainted as professional colleagues. During this time of sadness, may all who loved her be assured that in the years ahead, I will continue to treasure fond memories of her wise counsel, cantankerous yet compassionate spirit, and a dry sense of humor that was almost guaranteed to trigger a smile or chuckle even on the worst of days. My continued best wishes to her family.
