Robert "Bob" Lee Washburn's Obituary
Robert “Bob” Lee Washburn, 90, of Chanute, KS passed away at Neosho Memorial Regional on October 4, 2018. He was born on September 10, 1928 in Chanute to Franklin Ashley and Fay Sarah (Burgess) Washburn. Bob married Vesta Jean Leroy on May 17, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church in Chanute, KS. They celebrated 56 years of marriage before she preceded him in death in June of 2009.
Bob was born the youngest of seven children and graduated from Chanute High in 1947. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and was a proud veteran of the Korean War. He grew up working for his dad at the family business, Washburn Service Station, and eventually purchased the business for himself. The service station was a fixture in Chanute until Bob’s retirement in 1991. Bob was a talker, who liked river fishing, attending family reunions, daily coffee breaks at the Orchid Buffet with his coffee club, and enjoyed coaching youth baseball for his son, Larry, and continued even after his son outgrew it. He loved watching the KC Royals, Chiefs, and KU basketball, but especially enjoyed attending meetings during his lifelong membership in the American Legion and VFW.
