Robert Harold Geiger's Obituary
Robert Harold Geiger was born on February 22, 1926 to Harold and Betty (Pitt) Geiger at Sabetha, KS. Bob grew up in Sabetha where he graduated from high school. Following high school, he served in the Army Air Corps. After basic and radio mechanic school he served on Palawan Island, Philippines and Tinian Island. As Bob would say, I wouldn’t take a million dollars for my military experience, but I wouldn’t give a dime to have it again.”
After separation from service, he graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.S. in Education and M.S. in Guidance and Counseling. His teaching career included Effingham, KS, Parsons and Chanute high schools, and he served Neosho County Community College as Director of Guidance until his retirement in 1989. He enjoyed retirement by traveling, gardening, and volunteering in many local organizations.
Bob was united in marriage to Mary Jo McMillan in 1957. Their first home was in Chanute, KS. They had two children, Bryan Keith and Monica Jan. They would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on June 9, 2018.
Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #170, Veterans of Foreign Wars 1654, Order of the Eastern Star 147, Masonic Order Sabetha Lodge 162, Chanute Tree Board, founder of Southeast Kansas Mental Health Board, Red Cross Volunteer, NCRMC volunteer, Chanute Community Theater, Chanute Entertainment Series, and Chanute Retired Teachers.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Harold and Betty Geiger; sister, Sue Rickerson;, and son, Bryan.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Geiger; daughter, Monica Slepicka and husband Doug of The Colony, TX; grandsons, Adam Geiger of Parsons, KS, Xavier Slepicka of Lewisville, TX, and Jordan Slepicka of The Colony, TX; grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Countryside Funeral Home – Johnson Chapel in Chanute, KS on Thursday, May 24, 2018 from 6-8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Chanute, KS on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. followed by inurnment at Neosho County Memorial Park Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.countrysidefh.com. Chanute Honor Guard will be in charge of military honors. Memorials have been suggested to the First United Methodist Church or donor’s choice of local charities and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home. Services have been entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home 101 N. Highland, Chanute, KS. 66720.
