Robert Ernest Jenkins' Obituary
Robert “Bob” Jenkins passed away Friday, May 19, 2017, at his home. Bob was born July 2, 1932 in Topeka, Kansas, to Eugene W. Jenkins and Thelma Mae Linthicum Russell Jenkins. The family moved to Chanute in October, 1937. Bob attended Chanute Public Schools and graduated from Chanute High School in 1950. He attended one year of Jr. College. On June 12, 1955 he married Shirley Jean Reed in Chanute, and to this union three children were born.
Bob was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Chanute where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He received his Amateur Radio License at age 16, and his extra class license in 1968. He communicated with fellow amateurs all over the world. He worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation servicing radios, radars, and towers for the KDOT, Highway Patrol, and KBI. He retired in 1995 after 34 years with KDOT. He was a member of the United States Naval Reserves for eight years as a radio operator.
Bob is survived by his wife Shirley; daughters Brenda Highberger (Greg), Wellsville, Kansas; Cynthia Fairchild, Chanute, Kansas; son Rob Jenkins, San Antonio, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Judy Reed Nardi, Olathe, Kansas; Karen Jenkins, Las Vegas, Nevada; six grandchildren: Jessica (A.J.) Crockett of Round Rock, TX, Russell Gilliland of Lawrence, KS, Emilie (Seth) Galemore of Buda, TX, Peter Fairchild of Littleton, CO, Katie (Dave) Warner of Overland Park, KS, and Kara (Cody) Repp of Bonner Springs, KS; Six Great-Grandchildren, and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Eugene R. Jenkins and Gary L. Jenkins.
Cremation has taken place.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church, Chanute, Kansas, 11:OO A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Castaways Animal Shelter, or Harry Hynes Hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to: Countryside Funeral Home 101 N Highland, Chanute, KS 66720.
