Sunshine Erickson's Obituary
Sunshine Erickson of Chanute passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Diversicare of Chanute. Sunshine was born January 10, 1920 in Guilford, KS, the daughter of Herschel and Pearl (Orendorff) Short.
Sunny graduated from Benedict High School, and was the Salutatorian for her graduating class. She then went on to attend Pittsburg State University, and earned her teaching certificate. It was while teaching at her first position north of Chanute at Village Creek that she met and married Kelley Erickson on July 14, 1941.
Sunny gave up her teaching career at that time to become a homemaker and mother. It wasn’t until after her children started school that she went back to teaching. She taught at Chanute for approximately 25 years, and during that time she attended Pittsburg State University and earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
Sunny is survived by her children; Beverley Nogle of Chanute, KS, and son Eric Erickson of Augusta, KS, sister; Merima Carver of Fredonia, KS, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kelley, three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 11, 2014, 9:30 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Chanute, with Pastor Jim Uhlig officiating. Family has suggested memorials to the Neosho Memorial Hospital Foundation and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home. Services are entrusted to Countryside Funeral Home Gibson Chapel of Chanute.
