Sylvia Joyce (Downes) Stites, age 90, passed away July 18, 2020 at Yates Center Health and Rehab, Yates Center, Kansas. She was born September 11, 1929 in Boone County, Arkansas to Lawrence Willis and Nellie Victoria (Valentine) Downes.
Sylvia married Jack Stites on September 11, 1945 in Boone County, Arkansas, and together they had 7 children. Sylvia spent her life as a homemaker and mother. Her passion was quilting, which she passed on to all of her daughters.
She is survived by her sons:
Herbert Stites of Mt. View, Arkansas
Bert Stites of Siren, Wisconsin
Ben Stites of Altoona, Kansas
Daughters:
Nellie Kobelt of Buffalo, Kansas
Jackie Day of Bella Vista, Arkansas
Martha Walker of El Dorado, Kansas
Brothers: David Downes, Grover Downes, and Ace Downes, all of Arkansas

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; brother Bill; daughter, Sally; 3 grandsons, Kevin Cranor, Chad Harshman, Curtis Cranor; and granddaughter, Katherine Walker
Funeral service for Sylvia will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Countryside Funeral Home, 420 S. 20th, Fredonia, KS 66736.
Visitation will be at the funeral home for 1 hour prior to service.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, or the American Cancer Society and can be mailed to or left with the funeral home.
