Thomas Allen Greenwood's Obituary
Thomas Allen Greenwood, age 70, of Chanute, passed from this life on Thursday, March 3, 2016. Tom was born on November 2, 1945 in Chanute, KS the son of James Ashworth and Esther Marie Thurman Greenwood.
Tom attended grade school in Galesburg, Stark, and Kimball, Kansas and later attended the Parsons State Training School. As an adult, Tom lived in Ottawa, Kansas for 32 years where he worked at COF Training Center. He moved back to Chanute in 2007 to attend Tri-Valley Developmental Center. Tom loved his Tri-Valley family and the Greenwood family greatly appreciates the personalized, compassionate care and attention Tom received from everyone there. Tom was a good Christian man who had a strong awareness of and love for God from an early age. He was a member of the United Brethren Church.
As a child, Tom was a gifted artist who was fascinated with trains, drawing them with intricate details. When he became a teenager, his passion turned to music. Tom knew every song on the top 40 list of WHB Radio, in Kansas City. He could tell you the name of the group, their top hit song, and the year it was a hit from the 1960’s to 1990’s; his favorite was rock-and-roll music. He made a radio station turn-table where he did his “broadcasts” from home, giving the daily news, weather reports, and playing top hits.
Tom was a special gift to our family; he was a gentle soul who didn’t have a mean bone in his body. Tom taught us how to appreciate the small pleasures of life and to be thankful for each other. He reminded us to slow down, be patient, and the importance of keeping a sense of humor. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.
Tom is survived by his sisters, Bonnie Hamilton (Ron) Petrolia, Kathy Heald (Ron) Wichita, Debi Rogers (Steve) Plainview, TX, Jan White (Chet) Larned, Judi Wright (Jamie) Chanute, and brother, Jim (Jacque) Greenwood, Beverly, and many nieces and nephews who all loved him dearly.
Tom is preceded in death by his dad, James Greenwood and mother, Esther Marie Greenwood and a nephew, Reid Rogers and a great-nephew, Drake Walls.
