Vera M. Gastineau's Obituary
Vera Marguerite Gastineau, 90, of Chanute, passed away, Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Heritage Health Care Center in Chanute.
Vera was born in Pastura, New Mexico, on February 29, 1924, the daughter of Charles Haddon and Effie Jewel (Gross) Southern.
She was united in marriage to Louie E. Gastineau on April 1, 1945 in Hondo, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Vera served her Lord as a wife, mother, bookkeeper, church treasurer and rancher.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was involved in Church activities and mission work. She was President of the Women’s Missionary Union in Houston, TX and Boswell, OK. She also volunteered at Cherry Street Youth Center for many years.
Vera is survived by a daughter Ruth Rhodes and her husband Carl of Marshall, TX; a son, Donald Gastineau and his wife Pam of Chanute; and a daughter, Lynell Dyess and her husband Danny of Clifton, VA; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elizabeth Hicks of Roswell, New Mexico, Celia Sisson of Borger, TX and Edith Hellman of Atlanta, GA; and a brother, John Barton Southern of Roswell, New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Louie; a sister, Rosa Southern; and a brother, Charles Southern II.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Chanute. Burial will be at the Restland Cemetery in Boswell, Oklahoma on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at the Countryside Funeral Home Johnson Chapel in Chanute.
Memorials in her name may be made to the First Baptist Church of Chanute, Cherry Street Youth Center in Chanute or the First Baptist Church in Boswell, OK, and may be left with the funeral home.
