Vera Gearldene Matney's Obituary
Vera Gearldene (Gerry) Matney, 93, left this earthly life on August 2, 2015 with her children and several grandchildren by her side.
Gerry was born December 7, 1921 in Ellinwood, Kansas. Gerry was the 3rd of 10 children born to Clarence and Rena Hardcastle Frye. Gerry was married to Chester Lee Matney on January 24, 1942 in Fredonia, KS. To this union came 3 sons, Gary, David & Paul and 2 daughters, June and Terri Jo. Chet and Gerry also raised 2 grandsons, Richard and Cecil Mader.
Throughout her life Gerry enjoyed camping, crocheting (which she won many trophies for) playing bingo, Yahtzee, canasta and poker with her family. She was very family orientated and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and other family members.
Gerry always made time for friends of her children and grandchildren and was known as Granny by many. Gerry was known as Grandma Gerry to the children she babysat for.
Gerry is survived by sons; Gary Matney of Fredonia, David Matney and Paul (Juddy) Matney of Parsons and Cecil Mader of Hillsboro. Daughters; June (Bob) Dunham of Morehead and Terri Jo Matney of Fredonia. Sister; Janice (Melvin) Cox of Osage City. Brother; Dane (Mary) Fry of Eufaula, AL. Sisters in law; Isa Mae Fraser of Fredonia, Elouise Denney of Wichita, Mable & Buck Powell of Coffeyville, Evelyn Matney and Barbara Matney of Fredonia. Gerry is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 17 step great grandchildren and 14 step great- great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Gerry was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Carol Gene Prine, Grandson Richard Mader, Sisters; Violet Adams and Mozell Allen, and Brothers; Gale Frye, Jack Frye, Norman Frye, Ward Frye, and Valdon Frye. Daughter in law; Joyce Matney, as well as 2 step grandchildren.
Graveside Services will be held Thursday, August 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fredonia City Cemetery with Pastor Les Miller officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Countryside Funeral Home in Fredonia. Online condolences may be left at: www.countrysidefh.com.
