Virginia Ruth Denton's Obituary
Virginia Ruth Denton, 95, Chanute, KS passed away Monday morning, August 7, 2017, at Heritage Health Care in Chanute, KS.
Virginia was born July 14, 1922 in Oil Hill, KS to Michael and Hazel (Dodge) McCollum. She attended school in Oil Hill, KS and finished 8th grade there. She was a “stay-at-home-mom” except for a short time that she worked as a waitress.
Virginia enjoyed working with plastic canvas and making different items for family and friends. She loved playing bingo and attending the Senior Center. She enjoyed making spaghetti dinners for the members. She was a big fan of butterflies that you could see throughout her home. Virginia served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her daughters and a Den Mother for her sons. She enjoyed having her children’s friends over for parties and just to hang out. She loved being around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Virginia had a sweet smile that could melt anyone’s heart. She had a good sense of humor and loved to laugh. She was a little feisty and that is what kept her going. She didn’t hesitate to speak her mind.
Virginia was a member of Westview Southern Baptist Church for many years. She served as a member and director of the Womens Missionary Union for years.
Virginia and Lester C. Denton were married on August 2, 1942 in El Dorado, KS. He preceded her in death in December, 1974.
Survivors include four sons, Michael (Karen) Denton of Pinole, CA, Richard (Cheryl) Denton of Pittsburg, KS, Lawrence (Joyce) Denton of Chanute, KS, and Kenneth (Stephanie) Denton of New London, MN; three daughters, Anna (Jerry) Houston of Chanute, KS, Kay (Loran) Lance of Texas City, TX, and Janet (Hank) Hanshaw of Asheville, NC; 14 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Virginia was preceded in death by a son, James Andrew “Andy” Denton; and three sisters, Mildred Allen, Dorothy Sallee, and Helen Wing.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the Westview Southern Baptist Church . Interment will immediately follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute, KS.
