Walter Wayne Akkerman's Obituary
Walter Wayne Akkerman, 65, of Chanute passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center. Walter was born on July 6, 1958, in Seattle, Washington, the son of Martin and Sylvia JoEllen (Cole) Akkerman.
Walter grew up in Everett, Washington, and graduated from high school in Everett. After high school, Walter would join the United States Navy and serve is country honorably for four years. Upon his return from the Navy, Walter would settle in Coffeyville and meet the love of his life Kay Crowe. On September 21, 1984, Walter and Kay would be joined in marriage in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma at the pastor’s home; they would be married for 34 years until Kay’s passing on February 18, 2019.
Walter loved the outdoors, and when he wasn’t traveling the country as a long-haul truck driver, he would be at one of the local lakes camping and fishing all weekend. Walter is greatly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Walter is survived by his daughter Tonya Wren (Marvin) of Independence, MO, two sisters Rhonda Keheun of Erie, KS, and Dawn Shy of Lenapah, OK, his brother Keith Akkerman of Parsons, KS, three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Sylvia, his wife Kay Akkerman, and his brother Blaine Akkerman.
