Barbara Ellen Hefner's Obituary
Barbara Ellen Hefner passed away peacefully at Morningstar Care Facility in Neodesha, Kansas, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
Barbara was born February 5, 1946, in Wichita, Kansas, to Harry and Leah (Bohling) Hefner. The family moved to Fredonia, Kansas, in 1949. Barbara attended Fredonia schools graduating from Fredonia High School in 1964. During her high school years she was active in music, drama, debate, and student government. She graduated from College of Emporia in 1968 with a degree in music. Her primary career after graduation was in the moving industry which took her from Wichita to Houston. One of her proudest moments was contracting the overseas account of Aramco in Saudi Arabia. Barbara eventually moved back to Fredonia to care for her parents during which time she operated a clothing store called Glad Rags for ten years. Barbara also did some substitute teaching in the Fredonia school system.
Barbara’s love for music was shown by her playing in the orchestra for numerous Neewollah productions as well as singing with local music groups during the years. Trivia Pursuit was a favorite pastime that she greatly enjoyed with her friends. Holiday meals with cousin John Deardorff in Augusta was very special with foreign Wichita State students in attendance.
Survivors are her companion Aaron Russell of 16 years, brother Wayne Hefner of Round Rock, Texas, several nieces and a nephew, and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Janet.
Cremation has been requested with a private burial for a later date.
Memorials in Barbara’s name may be made to the Fredonia Arts Council or Fredonia Pound Pals.
